Before you start: Have your source audio saved on your device. The editor prepares the clip; follow the setup steps to use it for incoming calls.
Create the MP3 you want to hear
Choose an audio file on your phone and open the Ringtone Maker in your browser. You can start with a song excerpt, an instrumental recording or a sound you made yourself.
- Select the file and wait for the waveform.
- Choose a short passage that starts with the sound you recognize. Try a 20-second edit first.
- Preview the beginning and ending. Adjust the selection if it starts mid-word or includes unwanted silence.
- Select MP3, download the finished clip and keep it in a folder you can locate.
Name the file before creating several variations. A name such as guitar-call-01 makes the right version easier to identify in a file picker.
Set it with Files by Google
Google documents a way to assign a saved audio file using its Files app. If the app is available on your phone, follow these steps:
- Open Files by Google, choose Audio and play your downloaded MP3.
- Open the file's More menu and choose Set as ringtone.
- If requested, continue to the permission screen and allow the app to modify system settings. Look for the confirmation that the tone is set.
See Google's illustrated instructions for this workflow. On a Galaxy phone, you can also follow the dedicated Samsung settings route.
If you cannot find the downloaded clip
Open your browser's Downloads list and check the filename. Play the file from there first. If you edited on a computer, copy the MP3 to your phone and confirm it plays locally before trying to assign it.
Menu names differ between Android devices. Search Settings for ringtone if you prefer the phone's built-in picker. Keep the actual MP3 available locally; a shortcut to an online track will not replace the saved clip.
Check the ringing volume
Ring volume and media volume are separate controls on Pixel phones. A loud preview does not necessarily mean an incoming call will be loud. Google explains the sound and vibration controls here.
Set a comfortable ring level, check whether the phone is muted and make a test call. If you dislike the edit, return to your original source, move the selection and export a second version. You can keep the old file until you are sure the new one works better.
