How to make a ringtone online for iPhone or Android

Choose a song or recording, trim a clear opening, preview the result and export a ringtone for your iPhone or Android phone.

Before you start: Have your source audio saved on your device. The editor prepares the clip; follow the setup steps to use it for incoming calls.

Start with a file you can open

You need an audio file saved on your device: a song, voice recording or sound effect that you can use. A link to a streaming track is not an audio file. Keep the original so you can change your selection later.

Open the MP3 to Ringtone Maker, choose your audio and wait for the waveform to appear. If your browser cannot open the recording, try a supported version of the file in the audio tools collection.

Choose a short section with a clear start

  1. Play the source and find a phrase that sounds complete on its own. A brief melody or spoken line is often easier to recognize than a long introduction.
  2. Move the selection handles around that phrase, or enter exact start and end times. For example, starting at 00:42 and ending at 01:02 gives you a 20-second clip.
  3. Preview the selection from its beginning. Move the start if you hear silence, a breath you do not want, or half of a word.
  4. Listen to the ending too. Try a short fade if the final note stops abruptly, then preview again.

For an iPhone clip you plan to export through GarageBand, keep the selection within 30 seconds. A 15-to-25-second selection is a practical starting point for an everyday call tone on either platform.

Save a version for your phone

Choose MP3 for the Android workflow. For iPhone, the editor can prepare M4R for a compatible import method. If you will use GarageBand, save an MP3 version for that workflow instead; the next guide explains how to turn it into an installed ringtone.

Download the result and give it a recognizable name, such as morning-piano-20s. Play the saved file once to check that you downloaded the edited section rather than the original recording.

Finish in your phone settings

Editing produces the audio file. Your phone still needs to use it for incoming calls. Follow the iPhone GarageBand guide, the Android MP3 guide, or the Samsung Galaxy guide for that step.

After setting the tone, arrange a test call with your usual sound settings. Listen through the phone speaker and adjust the ring volume if needed.
